For his leadership and valor, Lieutenant McKenna was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

Lieutenant McKenna was the pilot of a F4U-5N Corsair night fighter with Composite Squadron 3, aboard carrier USS VALLEY FORGE (CV-45). On February 8, 1952, while flying a rescue combat air patrol, his aircraft was hit by anti-aircraft fire and its cockpit was set on fire. He was last seen over Kojo Bay, North Korea. He was presumed dead on May 3, 1954. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
