Lance Corporal McManus was a member of Battery C, 1st Battalion, 12th Marines, 3rd Marine Division. On June 5, 1968, he was killed by an enemy explosive device while fighting in Quang Tri, South Vietnam. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
