Colonel Mearns was a member of the 80th Tactical Fighter Squadron. On November 11, 1966, he was the pilot of a Thunderchief Fighter (F-105D) interdicting rail movement from China of Hanoi at Dinh Lap, Quang Ninh Province, North Vietnam, when his aircraft crashed. His remains were recovered on September 30, 1977 and identified on October 25, 1977. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
