For his leadership and valor, First Lieutenant Melander was awarded the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation, the Republic of Korea War Service Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
Notes
First Lieutenant Melander was a veteran of World War II. In Korea, he was a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. On October 12, 1951, after completing a successful attack on Hill 272 during "Operation Commando" in North Korea, he was listed as Missing in Action. He was presumed dead on December 31, 1953. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
