Initially listed as missing in action, unrecoverable or unidentifiable, the remains of PVT Mello were recovered in 1959 and identified in 1961. His remains were repatriated to the U.S. for permanent interment. His name is permanently inscribed on the Walls of the Missing at the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial at Colleville-sur-Mer/St. Laurent-sur-Mer, France.
