Ship's Cook Second Class Robert Merritt was a 23 year old American man from Yakima, Washington serving aboard the submarine "USS Bass" (SS-164) during World War II with three years service. On August 17, 1942 while submerged in the Pacific near Balboa, Panama, a fire started in the after battery room and spread to the torpedo room killing 25 crew members from asphyxiation from poisonous gas. He was buried at Corozal American Cemetery.
