Commander Metzler was aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS ORISKANY (CVA-34). On June 21, 1971, he was the pilot of a Vought Crusader Fighter (F-8J) conducting a flight over North Vietnam when his aircraft crashed into the Gulf of Tonkin 35 miles east of the Demilitarized Zone. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
