Lieutenant Colonel Meyer was a member of the 469th Tactical Fighter Squadron. On April 26, 1967, he was the pilot of a Thunderchief Fighter (F-105D) on a mission to destroy a supply bridge at Yen Vien, 5 miles northeast of Hanoi, North Vietnam, when his aircraft was struck by hostile fire and crashed. His remains were recovered on August 14, 1985 and identified on October 24, 1985. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
