For his leadership and valor, Master Sergeant Miles was awarded the Bronze Star, the Air Medal, the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
Notes
Master Sergeant Miles was serving as an air-ground controller for Company K, 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. On July 12, 1951, while flying in a AT-6D Mosquito observation aircraft, it was hit by ground fire, crashed and burned near Ousil, Korea. He was listed as Missing in Action and was presumed dead on December 31, 1953. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
