Captain Milius was a member of Observation Squadron 67 located at the Nakhon Phanom Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand. On February 27, 1968, he was the pilot of a Lockheed Neptune Observation Patrol Aircraft (OP-2E) on an armed patrol 15 miles southwest of the Ban Karai Pass, Khammouane Province, Laos, when it was hit by anti-aircraft artillery and crashed. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
