Sergeant First Class Montez was a member of Detachment B-20, 5th Special Forces Group. On May 24, 1969, he encountered a superior enemy group in Kontum Province, South Vietnam and was badly wounded. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
