Sergeant First Class Mooney was a member of Troop B, 7th Squadron, 1st Cavalry Division. On February 27, 1971, he was the door gunner/observer of a Hughes Loach Observation Helicopter (OH-6A) over Laos when the aircraft was shot down. The pilot and observer escaped the plane but ran into the enemy and were killed. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
