USMA Class of 1946, First Lieutenant Munkres was the pilot of a F-51D Mustang night fighter with the 35th Fighter Bomber Squadron, 8th Fighter Bomber Group. He flew over sixty combat missions. On the early morning of August 15, 1950, as he departed on a combat mission, his aircraft developed engine trouble and started to turn back to his airfield when his aircraft burst into flames. He crashed into the sea near Fyushu, Kyushu, Japan.
