Captain Nelson was awarded the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Prisoner of War Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Prisoner of War Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation, the Republic of Korea War Service Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
Notes
Captain Nelson was a veteran of World War II. In Korea, he was the pilot of an AU-1 Corsair attack fighter with the Marine Attack Squadron 212, Marine Air Group 12, 1st Marine Air Wing. On August 6, 1952, while attacking enemy positions, his aircraft was hit by anti-aircraft fire, crashed and burned. He parachuted and was taken Prisoner of War. He was presumed dead on March 17, 1954. His remains were not recovered.
