Major Nelson was the pilot of a F7F-3N Tigercat fighter with Marine Night Fighter Squadron 513, Marine Air Group 12, 1st Marine Air Wing. On March 2, 1951, his aircraft departed Airfield K-1 (Pusan West) for a night intruder mission at the Sariwon, Korean area. Last contact was at 1:30am. Wreckage was seen two miles south of Sohung. He was presumed dead on December 16, 1953. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
