First Lieutenant Nelson was a member of the Marine Attack Squadron 311, Marine Attack Group 13, 1st Marine Air Wing. On April 11, 1970, he was the pilot of a Douglas Attack Aircraft Skyhawk (A-4E) on a combat mission over Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam, when his aircraft was hit by ground fire and crashed. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
