Captain Newberry was a member of the 6th Special Operations Squadron. On September 29, 1968, he was the pilot of a Douglas Attack Skyraider (A-1H) on a mission over Saravane Province, Laos, when his aircraft was hit by enemy fire and crashed. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
