First Lieutenant O'Donnell was a veteran of World War II. In Korea, he was the pilot of a C-119B with the 62nd Troop Carrier Squadron, 314th Troop Carrier Group based at Ashiya Air Base, Japan. On July 23, 1953, while returning from a combat support mission, his aircraft crashed 1 mile from Ashiya Air Base.
