Staff Sergeant Olson was a member of Company B, 2nd Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division. On September 26, 1968, he was riding on an armored personnel carrier along Highway 14 about 20 miles northeast of Ban Me Thuot, Darlac Province, South Vietnam when the vehicle was hit by an anti-tank round. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
