Major Olson was a member of the 4th Air Commando Squadron, Da Nang Air Base, South Vietnam. On March 13, 1966, he was the navigator of a Chinook Spooky Attack Aircraft Gunship I (AC-47D) on a night armed reconnaissance of Route 92 running through the dense jungle covered mountains of Quang Nam Province, South Vietnam. Radio contact was lost. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
