Airman Second Class Pate was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

Airman Second Class Pate was a crew member of a C-46D Commando transport with the 34th Troop Carrier Squadron, 315th Troop Carrier Wing stationed at Brady Air Base, Kyushu, Japan. On November 15, 1952, his aircraft was transporting personnel from Kangnung Airfield (K-18) to Pohang Airfield (K-3). It crashed into the Sea of Japan shortly after takeoff killing ten on board. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
