Captain Pike was a member of 433rd Tactical Fighter Squadron. On July 12, 1969, he was the pilot of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4D) on a mission over the northernmost point of the Ho Chi Minh Trail, Laos. During the flight his aircraft was shot down. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
