Captain Plassmeyer was a member of the Marine Attack Squadron 311, Marine Attack Group 11, 1st Marine Air Wing. On September 11, 1970, he was the pilot of a Douglas Attack Aircraft Skyhawk (A-4E) flying on a support mission on the South Vietnam/Laos border when his aircraft crashed. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
