Colonel Pogreba was a member of the 49th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Yokota, Japan on temporary duty with the 36th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Takhli Air Base, Thailand. On October 5, 1965, he was the pilot of a Thunderchief Fighter (F-105D) on a mission 40 miles southwest of Dong Dang, which sits on the border of North Vietnam and China, where his aircraft was shot down. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
