Corporal Ponton was a member of Company F, 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. On August 8, 1951, during a training demonstration near Munson, Korea, the back blast of a 75 millimeter recoilless rifle struck and killed him.
