Chief Warrant Officer, Third Class Powers was a member of Company A, 158th Aviation Battalion, 160th Aviation Group, 101st Airborne Division. On April 2, 1969, he was the pilot of a Boeing Chinook Cargo Handling Helicopter (CH-47C) that took about 47 ARVN passengers aboard at a landing zone near Khe Sanh in Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam. After lift off the aircraft lost power and crashed into a ravine. over South Vietnam. he was listed as Missing in Action. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
