Staff Sergeant Preiss was a member of Command and Control North, 5th Special Forces Group. On May 12, 1970, he team leader of reconnaissance team "COBRA" operating in Laos. The team was taken under fire and Staff Sergeant Preiss was killed. His remains were recovered on June 20, 1995 and identified on June 17, 1998. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
