For his leadership and valor, Captain Rader was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Air Medal with 14 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Purple Heart, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

Captain Rader was the pilot of a RF-80A Lockheed Shooting Star photo reconnaissance aircraft with the 8th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron, 543rd Tactical Support Group. On October 20, 1950, while on a reconnaissance mission twenty miles south of Pyongyang, North Korea, contact with his aircraft was lost. He was listed as Missing in Action and was presumed dead on December 31, 1953. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
