Staff Sergeant Ray was a member of Command and Control North, 5th Special Forces Group. On November 13, 1969, he platoon leader of a reconnaissance team about 15 miles inside Laos in Saravane Province, when they were met by a superior force. He was declared Missing in Action. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
