Captain Reed was a member of the 555th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Ubon Airfield, Thailand. On July 24, 1970, he was the navigator of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4D) on a mission over the Plain of Jars in northern Xiangkhoang Province, Laos. In making the final strafing pass on a truck convoy, the aircraft was hit by hostile fire, crashed and exploded.
