Colonel Reilly was a member of the 4th Air Commando Squadron, Danang Air Base, South Vietnam. On May 15, 1966, he was the pilot of a Chinook Spooky Attack Aircraft Gunship I (AC-47D) on a mission 15 miles east of Ban Muong, Savannakhet Province, Laos, when radio contact was lost. His remains were recovered on March 11, 1997 and identified on November 24, 1999. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
