Colonel Richardson was a member of the 497th Tactical Fighter Squadron at Ubon Airfield, Thailand. On March 3, 1967, he was the pilot of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4C) on a combat mission near Ba Don, Quang Binh Province, North Vietnam, when his aircraft was shot down by hostile fire. His remains were recovered on December 15, 1988 and identified on November 17, 1989. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
