Staff Sergeant Rumbaugh was a member of the 21st Special Operations Squadron at Nakhon Phanom, Thailand. On May 15, 1975, he was a crew member of a Sikorsky Sea Stallion Cargo Helicopter (CH-53) on a rescue mission on Koh Tang Island, Cambodia, when his helicopter was shot down. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
