Captain Sandner was a member of the 1st Air Commando Squadron at Pleiku Air Base, South Vietnam. On June 7, 1966, he was the pilot of a Douglas Skyraider Attack Aircraft (A1-E) on a mission near Bo Keo, Ratanakiri Province, Cambodia, when his aircraft crashed. His remains were recovered on May 7, 1995 and identified on February 12, 1996. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
