Aviation Machinist's Mate Second Class Schaefer was a crew member of a PBM-5 Mariner patrol bomber with Patrol Squadron 46 U.S. Navy. On January 11, 1951, his aircraft crashed at sea near Amani O'Shima, Japan and he drowned. His remains were not recovered.
