Colonel Scharf was a member of the 47th Tactical Fighter Squadron. On October 1, 1965, he was the pilot of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4C) on a road reconnaissance about 79 miles west-northwest of Hanoi, 15 miles from the border of China, near Ban Puoi Airfield. His aircraft was hit by hostile fire and crashed. His remains were recovered on December 16, 1992 and identified on August 10, 2006. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
