Specialist, Fourth Class Schmidt was a member of the 71st Aviation Company, 14 Aviation Battalion, 16 Aviation Group, 23 Infantry Division (Americal). On August 15, 1970, he was the door gunner in a Bell Iroquois Utility Helicopter (UH-1H) extracting a reconnaissance team in Laos. Five men climbed on the rescue ladder and as the aircraft rose, it received small arms fire and crashed. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
