Major Schuler was a member of the 36th Tactical Fighter Squadron at Takhli Air Base, Thailand. On October 16, 1965, he was the pilot of a Thunderchief Fighter (F-105D) on a combat mission over Ha Tiang, North Vietnam, when his aircraft was hit by Hostile fire. His remains were recovered on November 19, 1999 and identified on October 13, 2004. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
