Major Schumann was a member of Headquarters, Military Assistance Command, Vietnam. On June 16, 1965, he was advising a village chief in Dinh Tuong Province, South Vietnam. He was in a vehicle about 5 miles northeast of Vinh Long along the border of Dinh Tuong Province, when he was ambushed and taken prisoner. He died in captivity. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
