Master Sergeant Schwartz was a veteran of World War II. During Korea, he was the turret system gunner on a B-50 jet bomber with the 328th Bomber Squadron, 93rd Bomber Wing, based at Castle Air Force Base, California. On January 13, 1953, while on a training mission the plane crashed near Gridley, California killing ten crew members.
