Ensign Shaughnessy was the pilot of a F4U Corsair fighter with Fighter Squadron 193 aboard the carrier USS PRINCETON (CV-37). On October 7, 1952, he was attacked by a MiG-15 near Hungnam, Korea. He parachuted into the water where he became entangled in the shrouds. He died shortly after he was recovered by the destroyer USS BOYD (DD-544).
