On April 29, 1965, he was the pilot of a McDonnell Voodoo Reconnaissance Fighter (RF-101C) on a photographic reconnaissance mission over northern Laos. As he passed over Sam Neua, his aircraft was hit by enemy fire and began to burn. He ejected safely to the ground and maintained contact for a while. His remains were not recovered.
