Sergeant First Class Shoemaker was a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. He was listed as Missing in Action while protecting the withdrawal of the remainder of the division along the road from Kunu-ri to Sunchon, North Korea on November 30, 1950. He was presumed dead on December 31, 1953. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
