Lieutenant Commander Shumway was a member of Attack Squadron 22, Carrier Air Wing 15 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS CORAL SEA (CVA-43). On June 25, 1972, he was the pilot of a Vought Attack Aircraft Attack Corsair II (A-7E) over North Vietnam when his aircraft was shot down at Xom Bau, Nghe An Province. His remains were recovered on August 3, 1993 and identified on June 12, 2002. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
