First Lieutenant Smith was the pilot of a F-86F Sabre Jet fighter bomber with the 12th Fighter Bomber Squadron, 18th Fighter Bomber Wing. On June 15, 1953, while on a night combat mission, after diving at a target, his aircraft failed to pull up and crashed. He was listed as Missing in Action and was presumed dead on June 15, 1954.
