Master Sergeant Smith was a member of the 179th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division. On July 27, 1953, after returning to his command post near Pau-gol, North Korea from evacuating his wounded commanding officer, he was struck by fragments from an enemy artillery shell and killed.
