Mathew Smith was born in the United States on August 31, 1865. He moved to Panama and worked as a porter for the Hotel Tivoli in Panama. After retirement he remained in Panama. He died on October 12, 1941 from cirrhosis of his liver at Santo Tomas Hospital. He was cremated and buried at the Corozal American Cemetery.
