Sergeant First Class Smith was a member of Command and Control Central, 5th Special Forces Group. On November 28, 1970, he was a member of a long range reconnaissance team in Attopeu Province, Laos near the tri-border area of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. The team came under enemy attack and Sergeant First Class Smith was killed. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
