Sergeant Smith was a rifleman with Company B, 3rd Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division. On March 3, 1969, he joining other units of the 4th Infantry Division about 25 miles west of Kontum, Kontum Province, South Vietnam when he fell down an embankment. He could not be found. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
