Sergeant First Class Smith was a member of Company L, 3rd Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. He was wounded in South Korea on September 5, 1950 and returned to duty on September 7, 1950. He was seriously wounded again on September 22, 1950 and returned on November 13, 1950. He was taken Prisoner of War while fighting the enemy in South Korea on February 13, 1951 and was killed by an air raid on Suan Beam Camp on April 22, 1951. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
